The story is framed by an elderly Tonto in 1933, recounting the origin of the legend to a young boy. In 1869, John Reid, an idealistic lawyer, returns to his home in Texas via the Transcontinental Railroad. After his brother and a group of Texas Rangers are ambushed and left for dead by the ruthless outlaw (William Fichtner), John is "resurrected" by Tonto with the help of a mysterious white horse.
