The most disturbing layer of The Zombie Island mythos is the real-world disappearance of its alleged creator. Investigative journalists from the Japanese web magazine Bunka no Ana traced the production style to a defunct animation studio called (スタジオぽんぽこぴい), which operated briefly from 1988 to 1991 in a suburb of Osaka.
