The film is set in the year (originally 2017 in the graphic novel). Humanity no longer leaves their homes. Instead, people lie in reclining chairs, connected via a neural interface to robotic bodies called "Surrogates" —perfect, beautiful, and invincible avatars that live their lives for them.
The story revolves around Tom Greer (Bruce Willis), a grieving father who lost his son in a tragic accident. Tom's surrogate is killed by a mysterious assassin, and he sets out to track down the killer. Along the way, he teams up with a local police officer, Rachel (Radha Mitchell), and together they unravel a conspiracy that threatens the very fabric of their society.
