This paper examines the trajectory of Project M (PM), a prominent modification of Super Smash Bros. Brawl , and its subsequent evolution into community-driven iterations such as Project M EX Remix . By analyzing the technical architecture of the modification—specifically the repurposing of Brawl’s engine to emulate Melee physics—and the modular "EX" coding system, this study highlights how the modding community engaged in a form of "digital archaeology" and creative expansion. Furthermore, this paper explores the complex legal and ethical landscape surrounding the distribution of derivative works. It argues that the shift from a competitive preservationist goal (PM) to an expansive creative platform (EX Remix) represents a significant case study in user-generated content, software ownership, and the sustainability of "abandonware" communities in the absence of official developer support.
