As of Maltego version 5.x, the company is slowly transitioning to a (OAuth2), similar to VS Code or Figma. In newer builds, you can simply "Log in with Maltego Account" and the license file is fetched automatically in the background.
If you’re upgrading your workstation or moving to a new laptop, always use the "Deactivate" feature within the Maltego client first. This "releases" the license file back to the server so it can be re-bound to your new hardware. maltego license file
