The story begins with Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), a high school student who has a premonition of his own death on a flight. After the plane explodes, Alex and several of his classmates survive because they were on the flight. However, death seems to hunt them down one by one in a series of ironic and often gruesome accidents, as if trying to claim the souls that should have died on the plane.
