The story takes place on the banks of the Danube River, involving two generations of Gypsy petty criminals. Matko, a small-time hustler, needs money and gets entangled with a powerful gangster named Dadan. A double-cross leads to a forced marriage between the gangster's sister and Matko's son, Zare. Meanwhile, Zare is in love with another girl, and the situation spirals into chaotic hilarity.
